This week Nician, one of our employees begins his SMSTS course. That is the Site Managers Safety Training Scheme. Nician joined us in 2005 as an apprentice. To say he had a lot to learn was an understatement and to be honest a few of us wondered if he would have what it took to keep his job.
Nician had other skills that we were keen to recognise and develop. He was reliable, a hard worker, honest and had a good level of basic skills. If we could develop him then we felt he could forge a great career for himself as a decorator. Over the next few years we took every opportunity to expose Nician to the varied works in the industry to give him that experience and to develop his trade skills. He proved that he was up to the task and one day we found that the shy quiet lad had grown in his role and was certainly a skilled decorator.
Along with others in the company we sent Nician on several industry related training courses. He completed his PASMA and IPAF courses. As his confidence grew with his experience and knowledge we decided that Nician had what it took to be a Site Supervisor. So we sent him on his SSSTS (Site Safety Supervisors Training Scheme) course which he finished top of his class.
Since completing his course he has worked under our Senior Supervisor at our main project at Llandough Hospital. This project has been running for about a year now and Nician has been relied upon on several occasions to run our operations on the site under very pressurised conditions.
So Nician starts his SMSTS course which will take him to a new level in his career. As a valued member of our team we are proud to invest in Nician and to watch him grow. I will update this soon once we have confirmation that he has passed his course and achieved this Site Managers Certificate.
Good luck Nician.
